Prominent figures such as Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung instead concluded that dreams provided insights into the inner workings of the mind.

At its core, his theory stated that while our conscious minds slumber, our unconscious minds produce images that can give us special insight into our deepest selves. Although people often think that the brain is shut down during sleep, researchers now know that sleep is a period of intense neurological activity.

Much like computers must periodically optimize their hard disks, our brains must continuously consolidate the memories we have stored. You can think of it as a kind of neurological housecleaning, sweeping away the unnecessary experiences from the previous day and storing the important ones more securely. Although not all researchers agree, many think that dreams may be an unintended consequence of these and other underlying neurological processes.

Harvard psychiatrists J. This is why dreams seem so illogical and strange. Psychology professor Bertram Forer first demonstrated this effect in , when he administered a fake personality test to 39 students. The average rating was an astounding 4. Even though they sound specific, they can apply to almost anyone, much like the interpretation of my haunted house dream. We could reasonably ask the same question about almost any interpretation given by a dream dictionary.

Their perspective, the Neurocognitive Model of Dreaming , is complicated, and impossible to completely explain here. Instead, Nielsen and Levin believe, the stories our brains weave from seemingly random dream images are guided, at least in part, by our emotional states. For instance, as the amount of negative experiences in our waking life rises, the probability of having bad dreams also rises.

This may be why people who have experienced trauma are more susceptible to nightmares than others.

When the process is working properly, dreams use the stresses and waking concerns in our lives as source material, taking them apart and reassembling them into odd but generally harmless stories, a procedure which ultimately allows us to move past them. Like many year-olds, I was full of youthful angst as I encountered the stresses of growing up — feelings which showed up in my dream. Nevertheless, the author infers that dream interpretation is all about decoding a secret message according to a fixed pattern. It would have been good if the author had read up on psychological dream interpretation, instead of taking examples from dream dictionaries online.

The dream function was created by evolution to keep the organism alert. A cat dreams about a mouse hunt, for obvious reasons. It is training. Not only that, it serves to keep personality happy and content, because our instinctual patterns are fulfilled. Most importantly, dreams compensate an unthinking daytime attitude, by presenting the dreamer with the actual problems.

It is very valuable for the survival and success of the organism. It allows personality to maintain psychological balance. The individual is the only one at all capable of doing that, but only for their own dreams.

Dreaming of a horse means different things to someone who has always wanted a horse and someone who's been kicked by one. No predetermined "dictionary" is going mean anything. Find the meaning in yourself. Or, some neuroscientists may be projecting their own reductive view of the psyche e. As a previous poster commented, if we want to learn about dreams, we should go to cultures that live with them, study them, and know them from the inside out, as experiences.

Metrics, especially from the outside, can only tell us so much. Personal experience is just as vital, perhaps even more so.

David B. Feldman, Ph. Back Psychology Today. Are they real memories from your conscious life? If so, what do they represent? We call this process unpacking the dream images. Find how the images traverse the actual lines of your life. What do you remember? Often dream images will unlock memories from our childhood. Perhaps our earliest memories. What a blessing this is when it happens.

Imagine that psyche is presenting you with something you forgot even existed. Maybe it was your old crusty sled or the wisp of a feather you held in your hand. Remember, it is appearing in your dream for a reason. I had a dream in that changed my life. I was going through a rough spell, and felt disillusioned and lost. In the dream I was sitting in a large cavern inside a mountain. The walls were aglow with lanterns and the floor was painted with a large intricate mandala.

All Men Dream, But Not Equally - T.E. Lawrence

I sat across from a young Dalai Lama who bowed his head in prayer. He looked up and told me that he had been expecting me.

Ticket Information:

He extended his hands and adorned me with wooden beads. You are perfect and whole and need nothing more. I am always here for you and will never turn my back. My love is eternal and I have put it inside of you. You know these things but I am here to help you remember. Try not to forget this again. I felt so blessed to be reminded of these sacred teachings.

Take One Step Today And Then Another Tomorrow

I felt free again and full of spiritual energy. And then The Dalai Lama got up and led me through a cave to the side of a mountain. As we looked down in to the snow-filled valley we heard the howls of a pack of wild animals. This was an archetypal dream as I visited with a divine being who showed me the way. I had always admired wolves for their sense of family and determination. There is an ominous nature to them that is characterized by their powerful and majestic presence. So many wolves have been affected by severe climate changes in recent years. I thought about the artificial corrosion of their natural habitat and the depletion of their food and resources.

Soon after I had this dream I quit my job as a producer in the film industry to go back to school to get a masters degree in psychology. When I graduated I began to work with marginalized families that were suffering from deprivation and poverty. I realized that I was now helping people who shared many of the characteristics of wolves. My dream had actualized into my waking life. Dreams have been a source of inspiration for me and many of my clients.

I encourage you to keep a dream journal on your bedside table. As you wake up with dream images fresh in your mind, write them down. Just a few images will help you drop back into the dream when you revisit it at a later time.

Dream on: where do our minds go when we fall asleep?

Dreams are important and happen to us for a reason: Listen to them with excitement and curiosity. They will help you to understand yourself in a deeper and more honest way.
