It looks at the shift of white writers to the West as a way of escaping history, politics, race, etc,in a way that echoes the sublime. Here we see a political engagement by African American writers in the traditions of the sublime as well as traditions of nostalgia. Outka makes clear here that these are not minstrelsy texts. These are not texts that place a black face on a white nature writing tradition. In conclusion, I am surely going to be spending the summer and beyond thinking through the implications of this book.
